Save some money this fall by making your own Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice with a few pantry staples you’re bound to have! This simple recipe can be used seamlessly in all of your pumpkin treat recipes, from cookies and lattes to that famous pie!
When it comes to my spice cabinet, I am currently caught between being ashamed of and feeling thrilled by the state it’s in.
I inherited most of my friend Lara’s herbs and spices when she downsized her life into a converted sprinter van. It’s been a process weeks in the making, but I’ve finally incorporated all of her refugee bottles into my own mix.
And now – no joke – I could easily open a small spice pop-up shop to sell my wares.
While doing this, I realized two things:
I was fresh out of pumpkin spice…but I had at least 2 jars of every individual “fall spice” in existence.
So I crossed the mix off of my shopping list and saved myself $6 by making my own!

You know, considering how many pumpkin recipes I’ve published on this blog since beginning it, I can’t believe I’ve never tried making my own.
When you browse Google for a pumpkin pie spice recipe, you’re going to find several different interpretations. Several severals, actually, since every blogger and food website has their own semi-unique blend.
I suppose I didn’t really need to add mine to the mix – but I do think this one is the best! Especially since spice companies don’t exactly release their exact recipes, anyway. Theirs are just as different.
My tastebuds have been abused by too much nutmeg in the past. That said, you’ll notice my blend is light on it, but heavier on the other spices involved.
If you find yourself in a pinch and out of store-bought pumpkin pie spice mix, this 5-minute DIY can be used as a substitute in any pumpkin-flavored recipe.
And if you’re heavy on the ingredients (like moi), you might even be happier making it in bulk for your future baking!
What is Pumpkin Spice?
Did you know that pumpkin spice is actually responsible for the famous flavor of pumpkin pie and other gourdy treats?
Pumpkin puree by itself is fairly one-note and bland in flavor, but the addition of a blend of warm spices is what gives it that familiar taste we’ve grown to look forward to every fall.
Not only does it make a wonderfully nostalgic pie, it’s also great in muffins and donuts, quick breads, candy, cheesecake, cakes or cupcakes, and even savory dinners & cocktails!
What’s in pumpkin pie spice?
There are usually only 4 to 5 ingredients in a store-bought bottle of pumpkin spice:
- Cinnamon
- Ground Ginger
- Ground Nutmeg
- Allspice and/or
- Ground Cloves
Learning how to make pumpkin spice is really all about your own tastes. The ratio in the recipe card here my be my favorite, but you might prefer more nutmeg and less cloves, or maybe using no allspice at all.
After you try my blend, use it as a base and play around with the measurements. You may even find you’ve come up with your own signature pumpkin blend.
And if you’re really an overachiever, you can grind your own fresh spices (like nutmeg and cloves) for an even fresher, more potent flavor!
This recipe yields just over 2 1/2 tablespoons of spice. You can double or triple the recipe to be prepared for lots of baking, or cut it in half for a single recipe. Just stir everything up in a jar and you’re good to go. Enjoy!
