Tangy, tropical sweetness meets classic cocktail vibes in these refreshing Passion Fruit Margaritas! Enjoy just one, or a whip up a party pitcher!
I’ve had many a margarita in my life.
Margaritas are probably my favorite cocktail for any occasion! They’re so simple to throw together, whether it’s taco Tuesday or Cinco de Mayo.
All you have to do is remember a simple 3:2:1 ratio for a perfect marg – but the mysterious passion fruit in this recipe adds another layer of tart deliciousness that might have you constantly keeping passion fruit juice in your fridge just for margarita night!
This page includes step by step instructions, as well as tips and notes. If you’d like to skip all that, feel free to scroll down to the full, printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.
Whether you’re hosting a summer gathering or simply unwinding after a long day, passion fruit margaritas are the perfect porch companions! Pair them up with prickly pear margaritas for a color contrast that will rival any sunset. And on the side, maybe a slice or two of decadently drizzled passion fruit cake?
Adding their tangy, tropical flavors to your classic margarita adds an actual burst of sunshine to your ice-filled glasses.
And if you can find some ripe passion fruit, pick them up! They’re not necessary for these drinks, but they look so pretty and taste lovely in your glass!
Grab a pitcher and a bottle of your favorite tequila, and come with me on this cocktail adventure!
What’s in a margarita?
Margs are a simple combination of three to five ingredients:
- Tequila – blanco yields the best flavor for mixed drinks. Save the aged reposado and añejo for shots.
- Lime juice – always, always freshly squeezed! Don’t try to substitute in pre-squeezed juice, and please skip the margarita mix! Fresh is always SO much better!
- Sweetener – either simple syrup or agave nectar work well in any margarita. Opt for agave if you want to cut back on the calories!
- Orange liqueur – ultimately, this is up to your tastes, but a little splash of Grand Marnier or Cointreau adds a nice citrusy sweetness to the final product.
- Rimming salt – coarse salt, kosher salt, sea salt… any of them work! In the case of this recipe, I like to mix my salt with a bit of Tajín for a little extra kick.
You can add all kinds of fruit, herbs, and syrups to these simple ingredients and come up with some pretty tasty recipes, just like I’ve done here. These sweet and tart margaritas take the basic recipe and make it even more tropical with the addition of both passion fruit puree and pulp!

What is the best tequila for margaritas?
Ultimately, the best tequila for margaritas depends on personal preference and budget. Blanco tequilas are often the go-to choice for classic margaritas, but reposado or añejo tequilas provide a nice depth of flavor.
- Blanco tequila is unaged, or aged for a short period, making it a great choice for margaritas. It gives cocktails a fresh, vibrant flavor and is usually cheaper than aged tequilas. Our favorite brands are Casamigos Blanco, Patrón Silver, and Don Julio Blanco.
- Reposado tequila is aged in oak barrels for a few months, meaning smoother, more complex flavors. Our favorite brands are Roca Patrón Reposado, 1800 Reposado, and Herradura Reposado.
- Añejo tequila is aged for at least one year, and their robust flavors are best enjoyed neat or on the rocks. Our favorite brands are Don Julio Añejo, Patrón Añejo, and Olmeca Altos Añejo.
How to make passion fruit margaritas
- Fill a cocktail shaker half full with ice. Combine the tequila, passion fruit puree, lime juice, orange liqueur, and sweetener in a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously for 45-60 seconds.
- Rim a rocks glass with Tajin salt (if desired) and fill with ice. Pour the contents of the shaker into the glass (with or without ice). Garnish with some passion fruit pulp and a lime wheel and serve.
To make a pitcher (8-10 servings):
- In a 2-quart pitcher, combine the tequila, passion fruit puree, lime juice, orange liqueur, and sweetener. Stir well, taste and adjust sweetness as desired, then refrigerate the pitcher until ready to serve.
- When ready to serve, rim the glasses with Tajin salt (if desired) and fill each with ice.
- Pour the desired amount of margarita into the prepared glasses. Garnish with some passion fruit pulp and a lime wheel and serve.
FAQ
Where can I find passion fruit for my margaritas?
Passion fruit can be hard to come by in non-tropical climates! Even in Florida, it was a chore to find, but it generally can be found in well-stocked grocery stores and specialty markets. Look for fruit with a wrinkled skin that feels slightly soft to the touch.
Fresh pulp is completely optional in this recipe though. You can always just use frozen passion fruit pulp, or bottled puree off the juice aisle.
Can I make these margaritas ahead of time?
You can prepare the base ingredients in advance! Mix the passion fruit juice, lime juice, and sweetener together and store it in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to serve, add the tequila and triple sec, shake with ice, and strain into glasses to save time without compromising flavor.

We switched things up on taco night and made a pitcher of these passion fruit margaritas instead of our usual recipe. So delish! I love that you provide the recipe for one serving or a pitcher. When I don’t have to do the math myself, I have more time to sit back and sip! ๐
